"A poet
does not bestow the past life of his image on me. Nevertheless, it
takes root in my soul immediately".
This quotation from Bachelard in "The art of Poetry in Space" is a clue to the understanding of Cristina Bicalho's revelatory work.
Such revelation is a result of the direct contact with her paintings, not of any preconceived idea. The colours she chooses are revealing. The artist daringly breaks free from style. She has chosen to follow a path of opposites which she dialectically transforms into a sort of dialogue.

There
is a contrast between abstraction and figuration. There is a contrast between opacity and transparency.
There is a contrast between bright colours and dark colours.
There is a contrast between quick brush stokes and slow ones.
The
ease with which she harmonizes these contrasts shows her artistic
maturity, which is very much consonant with Zen's philosophy, where the
perfect balance is always found in an intermediate standing. The art
connoisseur will feel the intense power of creativity that lies behind
her work, leaping from the canvas.
